New York State Association for Central Service Professionals (NYSACSP)
First Annual Educational Seminar

The scene was magnificent at Niagara Falls as the NYSACSP held their first annual seminar and vendor exhibit attended by more that 100 attendees and 25 vendors. The Association’s Board of Directors met on Thursday – June 12th, the day before the start of the seminar. Larry Guittard, the President of the Association presided at the meeting. The Board of Directors is comprised of 2 representatives from each of the 5 Chapters:

  • Long Island Association for Central Service (LIACS)
  • New York City Association of Central Service Professionals (NYCACSP)
  • Northeastern New York Chapter of Healthcare Central Service Professionals (NENYCHCSP)
  • Central New York Association of Central Service Professionals (CNYACSP)
  • Western New York SPD Managers Association (WNYSPDA)

In keeping with the By Laws, each of the Executive Board positions are held by a representative of each of the Chapters and chosen by the Board of Directors. The Executive Board for 2003-2004 is:

  • President: Bonnie Ingham, NENYCHCSP
  • President Elect: Wilhelmina Jones, WNYSPDA
  • Past President: Larry Guittard, LIACS
  • Secretary: Mary Olivera, NYCACSP
  • Treasurer: Wilma Lasher, CNYACSP
  • Director Ex-Officio: Ray Averill, SPSmedical
    Chip Moore, Getinge USA

The Seminar’s success was due to the diversity of topics presented by industry leaders and experts such as Tony Monaco, keynote presentation, Nancy Chobin, Betty Strickland, Ray Averill, Charles Hughes, Marcia Hardick, Wava Truscott, Ph.D, and Linda Shultz. The Association was honored to have Tony Monaco as a faculty member since he was instrumental in having Governor McGreeve of New Jersey signing into law the Central Service Mandatory Certification. Tony’s efforts and accomplishments were the inspiration for forming the New York State CS Association and the ultimate goal of the organization. Another distinguished guest was Delton Courtney – Mr. Monaco ’s counterpart in New York State was invited to meet with the Board of Directors and discuss the various routes available for achieving this goal. Mr. Courtney presented the group a road map to continue this journey.

One of the highlights of the seminar was the presence of both National Association Presidents from IAHCSMM and ASHCSP. Since the Association is made up of chapters from the different national groups, it was fitting that both Rose Seavey (ASHCSP) and Sybil Williams (IAHCSMM) participated in the theme of “Unity in the CS Profession.” They both danced and enjoyed the “Welcome Hawaiian Luau Reception” Friday evening at poolside and congratulated the State Association on being able to unify their efforts in achieving education and certification throughout the State. Ms. Seavey and Ms. Williams pledged to bring back the message of “Unity in the Profession.” to their respective memberships. The two presidents led the attendees in a walk to the falls on Friday evening to watch the spectacular fireworks display that lit up the celebrated spectacle of Niagara Falls .

The success of the seminar could not be possible without the support of the vendors and their participation. All vendors were recognized with special thanks and certificates of appreciation were presented to those that provided additional financial support. They are listed as follows:

  • ASP
  • Getinge - USA
  • Kimberly Clark
  • SPSmedical
  • STERIS
  • Richard Wolf
  • V. Mueller
  • Linvatec

They helped defray the costs of the seminar by sponsoring the luncheons and welcome reception, providing program and mailing support, seminar bags and speakers for the educational seminar.

The Association has already started to make plans for next year’s seminar and continue the journey to prepare the Central Service professional for the challenges of mandatory State certification.
